Curriculum and Learning
Piedmont Schools is committed to a comprehensive process of curriculum development and assessment to foster continuous improvement of student performance. Currently Piedmont Schools observes Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) for every subject matter. However, as mandated by the State of Oklahoma, Piedmont Schools is in the process of transitioning towards the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
The CCSS Initiative is a state led effort supported by the National Governor’s Association and the Council of State School Chiefs that has been designed to improve learning outcomes for students in grades K-12. Academic standards in English Language Arts and mathematics were adopted by the Oklahoma State School Board in June, 2010.
Piedmont Schools has developed a transition plan to allow for changes in professional development, curriculum, learning activities, and resources to prepare our teachers and students for the higher expectations of the CCSS. During the 2011-2012 school year, administrators and teachers are developing an understanding of the CCSS and the differences between CCSS and PASS. Our three elementary schools have adopted a new math series called enVision math that is a step towards the higher problem solving and critical thinking skills required with the CCSS. Additional curriculum changes will take place over the next two years as the implementation date approaches.
