Special Services

Welcome to Piedmont Special Services

Special Services is the department for special education and Section 504 services in the Piedmont Public Schools.  This department provides guidance and support to schools, teachers, and families to ensure that students with disabilities are provided specially designed instruction or speech/language therapy, at no cost to the parent to meet the unique needs of the student.

Professional educators with special education training and expertise provide programs and assist parents in the decision-making process regarding individualized instruction for students with disabilities.  Programs at Piedmont Schools range from early childhood special education services where young children receive specific services (e.g. speech/language therapy) or attend a Developmental Delay class, to the high school transition program for students ages 18-21, who due to their disabilities need some additional transition services. Piedmont offers a wide range of service delivery options for consideration by IEP teams that include:  regular education classes with accommodations, co-teaching, resource room/supplementary services, direct instruction and self-contained special education classes.

Some students may be provided related services as determined by the IEP team, which assist the student to benefit from special education that may include, but not limited to the following:  speech therapy, language therapy, counseling, physical therapy, occupational therapy, interpreting services, and special transportation.

Section 504 services are provided for students under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 when determined eligible as a person with a disability who has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities; has a record of such an impairment; or is regarded as having such an impairment.  Provision of an appropriate education means the provision of regular or special education and related services.

The Special Services department is committed to supporting Piedmont students and families.  Should you have any questions about services, please contact me for additional information.
