School Board Recognition Month

School Board Recognition Month
Posted on 01/30/2018

January is School Board Recognition Month and an opportunity for our local schools and community to honor our elected school board members for their dedication to our children and our schools.

School board members are tasked with establishing a vision for the education program, designing a structure to achieve that vision, ensuring schools are accountable to the community and strongly advocating continuous improvement in student learning. This volunteer commitment entails many meetings; numerous school functions to attend; reams of reports, agendas, proposals and other information to read and study; and a host of difficult decisions to make.

In Piedmont, school board members must develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues impacting our entire community. They bear responsibility for an annual budget of $23 million, over 4,100 students, 360 employees and seven school sites.

Tom Brokaw once said, "There is a place in America to take a stand: it is public education. It is the underpinning of our cultural and political system. It is the great common ground. Public education, after all, is the engine that moves us as a society toward a common destiny . . . it is in public education that the American dream begins to take shape."

Thank a Piedmont Public Schools Board Member . . . today!
